What if every time you made a choice that had a significant consequence, a new, alternate reality was created—the life that would’ve been had you made the other choice? What if those new realities were in danger? What if it fell to you to save all the realities? Atticus Higginbottom, a.k.a. Tick, is an average thirteen-year-old boy until the day a strange letter arrives in his mailbox. Postmarked from Alaska and cryptically signed with the initials “M.G.,” the letter informs Tick that dangerous—perhaps even deadly—events have been set in motion that could result in the destruction of reality itself. M.G. promises to send Tick twelve riddles that will reveal on a certain day, at a certain time, at a certain place, something extraordinary will happen. Will Tick have the courage to follow the twelve clues M.G. sends to him? Will he be able to solve the riddles in time? Will Tick discover the life he was meant to live? The first volume of an outstanding new children’s fantasy series, The Journal of Curious Letters is filled with adventure, humor, riddles, and, oh, yes—danger… As M.G. warns Tick, Very frightening things are coming your way. Will you join Tick and his friends on an amazing journey through the Realities? What will your choice be?

  1. As always, James Dashner has proven that he is a master storyteller. This book is fantastic, and I can’t wait for the next one!

  2. This is an EXCELLENT book! I am not into fantasy. I prefer romantic suspense – but this book completely pulled me in! I was glued to my couch until I finished it. Fantastic read!

  3. I’ve already said that I loved this book, we’re supposed to post on our favorite book for the Friday Favorites contest.

I love fantasy–and this fantasy was great. Hard to say what I liked best about it. It kept me riveted from beginning to end. I loved Tick. I really like that he has an intact family. And the twists and turns were amazing.

  4. Friday Favourite 13 Feb 2009.

I like the name Atticus and its accompanying nickname Tick. Atticus, because it reminds me both of To Kill a Mockingbird and Latin, (both of which I enjoyed, by the way) and Tick, because of the way it sounds. I like the letter T; I think it’s my favourite letter of the alphabet. I like the way it sounds and I like the way it looks. I also like the sound of K, as in the ending “-ck”. Tick. It just sounds right. *watches everybody back away* Okay, I know I’m weird, but I’m harmless. Mostly.

I really liked the book, too. I could really identify with Tick, being picked on at school. I just wish I’d had the chance to have some great adventures like that, which would have boosted my self-esteem no end. I’m really looking forward to reading the next books in this series, and I will keep nagging my son to read this, too.

  5. I love the main character’s name – Atticus Higginbottom. It just makes me grin every time I read it. I’ve asked James a few times how he came up with that name . . . but I still haven’t heard. Anyway, this is my vote!
